Discover Jersey with an Avis car rentalSaint Helier
Jersey's capital and largest town, Saint Helier, is situated on the southern coast. Its excellent tourist infrastructure offers all the essentials for visitors including top-end restaurants, hotels, shops, bars and cafés. As an added bonus, shopping here is tax free.
Wander around the Victorian Central Market, popular with tourists and locals alike, with stalls selling flowers and local produce. Admire the Elizabeth Castle towering over the city on its rocky islet and delve into the island’s rich heritage at the Jersey Museum and Art Gallery.
Let off steam at the AquaSplash aquatic facility. Featuring three swimming pools, flumes, slides and a ‘lazy river’, it makes for a great family day out.
Jersey War Tunnels
One of the most popular and poignant attractions on the island, the Tunnels offer a fascinating insight into the Nazi-occupied island as it was. Now a museum, the complex comprises a partially completed underground hospital and tunnel network built by slave labour during World War II.
Outside, take a quiet stroll in the Garden of Reflection or along the historic War Trail. Situated in St Lawrence, in the hillside in St Peter’s valley, the museum is open seven days a week from March to November.
My family and other animals
An excellent place to visit in your Avis car hire is The Durrell Wildlife Park in Trinity, home to some of the rarest animals on the planet. The park was established by celebrated author and naturalist Gerald Durrell with the aim of preserving endangered species and allowing animals a considerable degree of freedom. Many of the residents roam freely in a natural wooded environment. The park offers personal guided tours which you need to book in advance and also gives animal talks providing more detailed information about particular animals.
To get even closer to nature, why not stay in one of the complex’s luxury camping pods, fully-equipped with double bed, wood-burning stove plus shower and kitchen facilities. Budding vets or zoo keepers can enjoy behind the scenes experience days.
Café Firefly provides sustenance with much of the produce coming from the park’s own garden. The shop offers a wide range of animal-related merchandise so you can take a little piece of wildlife home with you.
Getting to the park is easy and there is free parking. It’s also open every day of the year.
Events and festivals
Foodies who flock to the island to enjoy its famous produce will very much appreciate the annual food festival held in May. Celebrate the Jersey Royal potato and savour the abundant seafood. Attractions include tours of farms and dairies, low water walks and an al fresco food event in Saint Helier.
From food to drink, the annual Faîs’sie d’Cidre event is held in October. This is a celebration of the island’s apple growing and cider making traditions. Enjoy the local craft market, children’s activities and live music.
The Battle of Flowers Grand Day Parade is one of the most spectacular events of its kind. Held in August, the parade of flower-festooned floats and other entertainment brings visitors from all over the world. The Battle of Flowers Moonlight Parade, also held in August, is even more atmospheric. Floats are adorned with hundreds of lights to give this event a truly magical quality.
